Frequently Asked Questions about web design

Frequently Asked Questions

I need a new website, where do I start?
You’ll need a few things:
  • A domain name – So people can find your website.
  • Web Hosting – Somewhere to put your website.
  • Content – Text and images to put on your new website. Let’s face it empty pages aren’t particularly interesting.
We can help you register a domain name and set up web hosting – if you haven’t already. We can build you a professional looking well functioning website. Unfortunately we don’t own a magic wand, so providing the content is down to you. Our job is to make sure the content you provide is well organised and professionally presented. But don’t panic! We can make a start, even if you haven’t got your content ready, by using dummy text and  images until you’re ready to go.
What’s is a Domain Name?

Domain names are a bit like the Internet equivalent to an address in the real world. Or rather they are part of the full web address (URL).
In our case beecheswebdesign.uk is our domain name.
The full URL for our website is https://beecheswebdesign.uk.

A URL is what web enables browsers – Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge etc. – to locate your website.

The naming system is carefully regulated to prevent duplicate addresses. So once you’ve secured your domain name no one else can use it for as long as it’s registered to you.
It’s extremely important not to allow your registration to expire. If it does expire, it will become available to others and you risk losing the domain name. Your website will also disappear if your registration lapses.

Were do I register a Domain Name?

There’s a mind boggling list of domain name registrars to choose from (some more expensive than others).

If you haven’t already registered your domain name, we’ll be happy to help or point you in the right direction.

I have my domain name what about Hosting?

Many domain name registrars also offer web hosting, often at very low prices. These may well be adequate for your needs but as with all things, you do get what you pay for.

We offer our own web hosting package, but certainly won’t push you to use it. In fact there may well be a more suitable alternative, so again, depending on your needs we’ll be happy to advise you.

Do I have to host my website and domain name with the same provider?

No you don’t. It’s just a case of making your domain name points to the place your website lives.

We can either show you how it’s done or do it for you.
It’s a piece of cake.

Do you provide web hosting?

Yes, we do.

At Beeches Web Design we run our own Virtual Private Server (VPS).

Our package includes daily backups in multiple locations. All sites we host are continually monitored for performance. They are also kept up to date to make them as secure as possible.
If our hosting isn’t suitable for your needs, We’ll happily also advise you on your hosting options.

Some web hosts seem to offer great deals, but they’re often not all they claim to be. Advice on hosting is included in our free consultation.

I can build a website for free so why should I pay?

It’s true that many web hosting packages also include ‘free’ web building tools.
These provide an ‘easy to use’ method of putting a website together. If you have the time and can work out how to use their tools effectively, they might be all you need. However the features are limited and putting your site together in a coherent way will take valuable time.
Our initial consultation is free, so you’ve got nothing to lose.  And we promise, Should you decide not to use our services, we won’t keep bugging you.

You may already have a simple ‘off the peg’ site that has done a good enough job, up until now. Maybe you need to expand it beyond the current limitations. Perhaps it’s just looking a bit sad, next to the sites of your competitors. Not a problem, we can easily take the existing content and move it over to a custom built website you can feel proud of.

Are your sites optimised?

Yes, we take care of the essential aspects of SEO.

What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Most people have heard the term Search Engine Optimisation or SEO.
But what does it mean?
SEO is far too extensive a topic to cover in a few sentences.

Simply put, it’s about making sure your website’s content satisfy’s specific criteria in order to rate well with search engines, such as Google and Bing.
A well optimised site will rank more highly on a search results page and therefore attract more visitors.

We make sure all our sites conform to Google’s SEO basic guidelines.
Here’s what Google have to say.

Are your sites Responsive?

In a word, yes.
We test our sites on a range devices and screen sizes.
We also test in all major browsers.

What is a responsive website?

A responsive site displays content differently according to the size of the screen.
A properly designed website needs to perform and display properly on all devices. Our sites will work well and look good on smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers.
The number page of views on smartphones has actually overtaken views on desktop computers. So this is no longer a luxury, but an essential feature for your site.

Can you update my existing site?

Of course.

How long will it take?

Again, impossible to say until we’ve discussed what’s involved. Once we’ve finished the initial consultation we’ll provide a quote, along with a proposed schedule.

How much do you charge?

That’s a bit like asking ‘How long is a piece of String?’
Naturally it depends on your requirements.
Our quotes are based on a rate of £40 per hour. We will honour the price we quote as long as the brief doesn’t change. So, if you ask for additional features well quote again for the extra work.
Remember our initial consultation and subsequent quote is free of charge.
Every website is different, so providing an accurate price is impossible without a detailed discussion. However below is a general price guide*.
